
A fingerprint scanning system installed at an Edmonton nightclub has been deemed as legal, according to a ruling by the province´s privacy commissioner.
According to local sources, the Empire Ballroom in West Edmonton Mall had installed the device in order to track the arrival and departure times of nightclub employees.
The ruling was a blow to the one female worker who that the device was "highly intrusive."
The privacy commissioner’s ruling stated that the device was not an invasion of privacy.
A similar device has been installed at the Southwood Care Centre nursing home in Calgary – a system also deemed legal, despite complaints.
